Healthcare Management

This course will examine healthcare insurance and its role within the U.S. healthcare system. Students will learn the history and development of healthcare insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid, the VA insurance system, commercial insurance, and self-financed/self-insured. Concepts include eligibility, deductibles, co-pays, co-insurance, explanation of benefits (EOB), covered services, in-network, and out-of-network benefits.

This course reviews foundational management theories and problem-solving for healthcare leadership. Topics include strategy, quality improvement, ethics, finance, communication, team dynamics, and developing practical skills such as conflict resolution and decision-making to navigate the healthcare environment and improve health outcomes.

This course covers healthcare finance fundamentals with a focus on practical application in real settings. Using a case study centered on developing the XYZ Clinic, students engage with scenarios that prepare them for future careers. By course end, students can create and analyze clinic budgets, interpret financial reports, and understand the impact of financial decisions in healthcare organizations. The course also provides hands-on experience with financial statements, insight into healthcare payment systems, and foundational budget management skills.

This course is an introduction to healthcare quality and patient experience in the U.S. healthcare system. Students will explore topics including regulatory requirements, key quality metrics, measuring quality and patient experience, public reporting, and impact on healthcare outcomes and costs.

This capstone course is the final academic requirement for Healthcare Management students. Through a project-based format, students apply knowledge and skills gained throughout the program. Students can choose a project that matches their career interests and analyze a real issue in a healthcare organization, proposing practical solution(s). By integrating theory and practice, students address current challenges in healthcare organizations and demonstrate readiness for professional roles in the field.
