Description

An introduction to the field of dentistry and dental hygiene. Other topics include study strategies, dental office basics, basic dental terminology, introduction to evidence-based research writing, tooth designation systems, tooth development and eruption, prevention strategies for the dental hygienist, ethics in dental hygiene, and infection control.

Course Goals
  1. Cultivate values of the dental hygiene profession by developing an understanding of dental office function, procedures, processes, and team roles.
  2. Summarize the foundations of clinical dental hygiene experience including preventive and therapeutic care according to the dental hygiene process of care; assessment, dental hygiene diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation.
  3. Identify ethical decisions that are supported by evidence-based research by obtaining, analyzing, and recording information around scientific research studies and data collection.
  4. Utilize learning preferences, study strategies, and time management skills to enhance learning and create successful outcomes related to professional goals.
Learning Outcomes
  1. Define, articulate, spell, and integrate terms associated with the field of dental hygiene.
  2. Develop a basic understanding of dental office functions, procedures, practices, ethics, and core values.
  3. Explain the Dental Hygiene Process of Care and describe the principles for the dental hygiene process of care.
  4. Utilize the specific tooth identification system most used in the United States dental settings, The Universal Numbering System for both the deciduous and permanent dentition.
  5. Develop an understanding of learning styles and how they relate to study strategies.
  6. Explain the general purpose of infection control protocols, procedures, rules, and regulations for the practice of dental hygiene.
  7. Explain the function and process of biofilm development and understand the impact on oral health.
  8. Explain the purpose of evidence-based practice and research in the practice of dental hygiene.
  9. Develop an understanding of the purpose for basic prevention strategies used in the practice of dental hygiene.
  10. Recognize the five stages of tooth development and the process of tooth eruption in the primary and permanent dentitions.
