Description
This course is an introduction to the basic fundamentals and techniques of traditional painting to students with little or no previous
formal training in this medium. Students will develop a working knowledge of the physical properties of water-based paint by exploring the materials, methods and varied painting approaches that this medium brings to the fundamental issues of painting. Students with prior experience will benefit from the in-depth approach to the subject as it is presented. Both historical and contemporary Master artists in painting will be referenced to enhance this rich experience.

- Understand basic tools and traditional methods of oil painting.
- Synthesize drawing and composition through preliminary studies to the finished paintings.
- Translate light and interpret value and color through observation and practiced applications.
- Use traditional preparatory and under-painting methods, as well as layered and direct painting.
- Understand the tradition of painting and its genres with respect to still life, portrait, and landscape
- Critique artwork using formal analysis and historical perspectives.
