Course Description
ORTH108C - Orthopaedic Casting and Splinting I This area is an integral part of the practice of an Orthopaedic Technologist. Topics to be covered will be the types, application, related orthopaedic conditions, functions, and materials of the various casts and splints and the complications associated with them. The student will learn basic terminology related to the subject. Proper padding, molding, and trimming techniques will be demonstrated relating to casting and splinting. Instruction in the proper use of external aide devices, such as crutches, canes and walkers, and transfer of patients from wheelchairs and bed. Students will also become proficient in the application of DME's (Durable Medical Equipment) commonly used for specific orthopaedic conditions once cast is removed. Custom bracing will be incorporated into this curriculum as they pertain to specific orthopaedic injuries. Attention will be given to the removal of casts and splints, as well as the skills associated with providing patient instructions. A specialty supplies fee will be assessed for all students taking ORTH 108C.
