Global Public Health Issues

INDL120C - Global Public Health Issues This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to and overview of the key areas of global health by addressing the major determinants of health and how health status is measured to determine the burden of disease in the developing world. Using the perspectives of public health, the course will cover factors associated with the development of health problems and efforts to prevent disease in impoverished areas. Students will also explore the role of social communication, politics, religion, economics, education and culture in contributing to global public health issues and will integrate these factors and values in developing solutions to the widespread public health issues impacting communities worldwide. Students will learn about the magnitude of disease in the developing world (e.g., communicable and non-communicable disease, women and child health, nutrition, and unintentional injuries) and how health is assessed and how health systems effectively work together to improve global health. (Note: This course may be used to meet EITHER an "SO" elective OR a "Humanities" elective, but not both.)
