Description
A continuation of BIOL 195C. Includes anatomy and physiology of the endocrine system, circulatory system, immune system, respiratory system, digestive system, excretory system, and reproductive system. Other topics covered include nutrition and metabolism, acid/base balance, fluid and electrolyte balance, and genetics. Lab work parallels lecture topics and includes microscopy, study of human anatomical models, dissection of preserved animals, and physiological experimentation.
Prerequisites
Students are required to pass prerequisite courses with a grade of C or higher. Exceptions apply; please consult your department chair.
Upon completion of this course, students will:
- Describe the structure (at all levels of organization), physiology, and homeostatic mechanisms (both intra- and intersystem) of each of the following systems: endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatics/immune, respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproductive.
- Examine the metabolic pathways for the production of energy within the human body.
- Compare and contrast the basic classes of nutrients.
- Discuss mechanisms for fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base maintenance.
- Demonstrate proper care and use of the compound light microscope.
